The Southern Wings Advantages:

Reputation
Southern Wings is known for its ability to produce pilots of the highest calibre.

Experience
The history of Southern Wings can be traced back more than seventy years. It is one of New Zealand’s original aviation colleges.

Location
Southland provides a wide variety of flying challenges with its variety of terrain – everything from gently rolling pasture and hill country to rugged coastline, alpine lakes and snow-capped mountains. The deep south latitude provides long daylight hours - an amazing 16 hours in summer.

Weather
A good pilot needs to gain experience with all types of weather. Southland, with its close proximity to the Southern Ocean, Fiordland and the Southern Alps, enjoys a wide range of weather conditions - from beautiful clear sunny days in summer and winter, to cold, blustery conditions. It is this variability that strengthens the skills of our pilots and increases their confidence in demanding situations.

Traffic Density
Southland has low air traffic density, making it an ideal location for air training.

Controlled and Uncontrolled
Southland represents the largest uncontrolled airspace in New Zealand, with Invercargill Airport providing experience with air traffic control.

Personalisation
For all courses - Private Pilot Licence, Commercial Pilot Licence and the Diploma of Aviation - training is tailored to your needs.

Low Cost, High Quality Lifestyle
Southlanders enjoy a great outdoor lifestyle and a relatively low cost of living. The adventure activities of Queenstown and Wanaka are within easy reach.

Diversification
In conjunction with the Southern Institute of Technology, Southern Wings is able to offer a two year dual diploma programme - Diploma in Aviation and Diploma in Management.

Enjoyment
Your involvement with Southern Wings will stretch into your off duty hours. We have clubrooms and a very active social club. You’ll be mixing with pilots of all ages and levels of experience from around New Zealand.

This is an excellent opportunity to earn a double qualification giving you a competitive advantage in the employment market. Many areas in aviation are fertile ground for qualified pilots with business management skills - national airlines, regional airlines, tourist operations, air charter, flight instruction and agricultural flying.

Southern Wings will arrange a personalised programme that enables you to achieve your pilot licences. There will also be specific times available to study the NZIM Diploma in Management at SIT.

The Diploma in Management papers are covered by SIT's Zero Fee Scheme, but your flying hours are not. The Diploma in Aviation is Studylink approved, so you should be able to qualify for a student loan if required.
