People entering a programme of study leading to the award of this qualification will be competent in riding and the care of horses. When awarded with this qualification they will be able to prepare for and guide horse treks of up to one day, and to care for horses both during the horse trek and while turned out between treks, as well as bringing horses back into work after a spell. The qualification also recognises the skills involved in communicating with, and managing clients from a tourism perspective while in an outdoor environment, as well as managing the horse trek as a whole for the duration of the trek. This includes navigation skills, weather interpretation, and the health and safety of clients and horses. The elective offers the candidate a choice of levels and areas for the further development of expertise.
This qualification can lead to further qualifications in the Tour Guiding, Adventure Tourism and Equine fields.
The optional Multiday Horse Trek Guiding strand recognises the additional skills and knowledge required to prepare for and guide clients on horses on horse treks of more than one day and includes at least one night at an off-site campsite.

People applying for entry to a programme of study leading to the award of the National Certificate in Horse Trek Guiding (Level 3) with an optional strand in Multiday Horse Trek Guiding [Ref: 0844] must have completed the National Certificate in Equine (Introductory Skills) (Level 2) [Ref: 0215] or have demonstrated equivalent knowledge and skills, and have a current first aid certificate.
