Tracey Lewthwaite: Security Officer, Christchurch Casino
Tracey enjoys the challenge of her role as a security officer at Christchurch Casino.
Tracey Lewthwaite is a Security Officer employed at Christchurch Casino.
How did you get started in Casino Security?
I was already working at the casino in a hospitality role and one of the other officers suggested that I should try for a security role. I have worked in a number of jobs including cleaning, retail and motel minding. A lot of this security role is customer service focused so my employment history helps with this job.
What are some of the highlights of your career?
The highlights are the funny moments that you experience as a security officer. Also working the front door and using my experience and approach to deal with people at the front door, especially the people that we will not let in. Then there is getting to know the customers, some of whom I have gotten to know really well.
What are some of the things you enjoy most about working in the casino security industry?
I like working with all the different people - talking and interacting with so many different nationalities, both the staff and the visitors. I also feel safe knowing that I am a part of a team and there is good backup available if it is needed.
What training did you have to do to get to where you are today?
We get a lot of in-house training around the gaming compliance/problem gambling identification and alcohol licensing. I really enjoyed the three day restraint and handling course. I am currently working towards the National Certificate in Casino Security (Level 3).
What are the traits of a good security officer?
Honest and punctual, friendly and with good customer service skills.
What advice would you give to someone wanting to work in casino security?
You would need to be flexible with your times as you work a lot of shiftvwork.
