Aviation: in the air and on the ground

Aviation is an exciting and diverse industry. Aviation crosses travel, tourism, hospitality and agriculture sectors. There are a broad range of job opportunities and pathways ranging from careers in large airlines, the Air Force, through to smaller operations within tourism and agriculture.

People enter the aviation industry either straight from school or from another background. You may have trained in another field, and held a life-long dream of being part of the aviation industry. You can change careers within the aviation sector. Many flight attendants and air traffic controllers change to piloting, whilst pilots may move into areas of flight training and management. Or you may be working in tourism or travel and want to move into the aviation sector.

The NZSkillsConnect Visual Mapper shows how careers can be built in aviation. You can be involved in aircrew, including pilots and flight attendants, passenger services, engineering, air traffic control, aeronautical storekeeping and airport services.

Pilots fly the aircraft, whether it be a aeroplane (fixed wing) or helicopter (rotary wing)

Flight Attendants take care of passenger’s safety and requirements during the trip.

Passenger Services refers to Check in Agents and Supervisors who oversee the movement and care of passengers around the airport terminal.

Engineers look after the maintenance and repairs needed to keep the aircraft and its components in good condition.

Air Traffic Control oversees the safe movement of aircraft in the air, and around airports ensuring that aircraft do not fly too close to other aircraft or objects.

Aeronautical Storekeeping oversee the supply and storage of relevant part and components for aircraft repairs and maintenance.

Airport Services cover Baggage Loaders, Push Backs, Aircraft Cleaners and Refuellers.

The Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF) is a critical component of the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) and New Zealand's security posture. It provides a military air capability that meets the requirements of the New Zealand Government; a capability that is characterised by its swift response, its long reach and ability to adapt to a range of contingencies.

Aviation is demanding and highly rewarding. The range of different licenses and qualifications available provide an attractive option for anyone wanting to be part of aviation. It offers travel, both nationally and internationally, the opportunity to gain employment worldwide, and personal satisfaction from working towards and achieving a long-held goal.
